With ChatGPT and Claude, the brand is no longer an experience, it's a channel
What: ChatGPT and Claude now host third-party brand apps, leaving brands in control of their content but not of the container, the ranking or the conversation.
Why it is important: With discovery shifting to assistants, the in-store experience and the service that follows a purchase become the main grounds for preference and repeat business, which favours formats built on physical presence.
In July 2008, the App Store gave brands their own screen. On October 6, 2025, OpenAI opened ChatGPT to third-party applications, and Anthropic offers a directory of connectors for Claude on the open protocol. This time the screen does not belong to the brand. In an MCP app, the brand writes what is displayed, but the platform sets the container, the way the app is invoked and the ranking, within a conversation the brand does not control.
The Nielsen Norman Group describes a shift from interface design to results design, where the model generates the interface and brands supply constraints and data. At the discovery stage, the brand becomes one source among others that the assistant compares. BCG's Consumer AI Disruption Index, published in January 2026, notes the funnel shrinking, and 67% of 238 marketing executives surveyed by BCG and Moloco anticipate significant disruption to the customer journey.
What remains is substance. Wrong answers, availability and prices are exposed instantly, and a polished interface can no longer mask weak service. Brands differentiate through the quality of the data they expose to the protocol and through direct relationships AI cannot replicate. BCG places retail among the sectors under attack.
IADS Notes: Sephora's app within ChatGPT, offering personalised recommendations and loyalty benefits, shows brands entering the assistant on the platform's terms (Fashion Network, March 2026). In-chat checkout removes the digital shelf and the direct customer data that came with it, and with no paid placements brands have to earn visibility through credible data (Inside Retail, September 2025). That raises the bar on how content is prepared: machine-readable material and agent win rates are replacing click-through rates as the benchmark (Bain & Company, March 2026), while the completeness and consistency of product data directly influence how often a brand is surfaced (Journal du Net, March 2026). With nearly half of Gen Z shoppers starting product searches in AI tools and brand stories increasingly told outside retailers' control, department stores are turning their physical spaces into cultural and social destinations (WWD, April 2026).
