Much has already been said and written about the bankruptcy of Sears, the 132-year old retail giant, announced on 15 October 2018. Sears has been described variously as "a grand icon of American business" and even as "a symbol of American capitalism". The company has occupied a place in the US imagination rivalled perhaps only by Ford, GE, and IBM historically, and more recently by Apple. It shares with the latter a type of intimacy resulting from close contact with customers' private lives and aspirations.
