What: El Corte Inglés prepares for a new growth phase after a decade of transformations and challenges.

Why it is important: The company's evolution demonstrates the impact of e-commerce, financial pressures, and family dynamics on major retail businesses.

Ten years after the death of Isidoro Álvarez, El Corte Inglés is poised for a new growth phase following a decade of significant transformations. The company has faced numerous challenges, including the rise of e-commerce, financial pressures, family conflicts, and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite maintaining similar revenue levels to a decade ago (around €14.5 billion), the company has improved its profitability indicators. It has divested non-core businesses, reduced its workforce by over 11,000, and significantly lowered its debt from €5 billion to around €2 billion.
Under new leadership, including CEO Gastón Bottazzini and President Marta Álvarez, El Corte Inglés is preparing a strategic plan through 2030. This plan aims to focus on traditional retail with increased digitalization, supported by its travel agency business.
The company has undergone significant changes in governance and ownership, including the entry of external investors like Qatar's Al Thani and Mutua Madrileña. It has also navigated family conflicts and leadership transitions.
El Corte Inglés now faces the challenge of adapting to changing labor conditions and rejuvenating its workforce while continuing to innovate in the competitive retail landscape.
