Target's operations app updates let associates spend more time with customers
What: Target has expanded its myDay store operations app, which uses inventory, associate availability, item locations and sales forecasts to prioritise tasks and which the retailer says saves associates more than 2 million hours a year.
Why it is important: Target is putting technology behind the associate investment it announced in February, using task prioritisation to turn added store hours into customer time rather than back-of-house work.
Target has expanded its myDay store operations app to help associates and managers streamline tasks and spend more time on customer service. The tool draws on inventory, associate availability, item locations and sales forecasts to prioritise work, and Target says it saves associates more than 2 million hours a year.
Target designed myDay to answer common associate questions, such as which task needs attention first and where to go next. The latest updates draw on input from more than 50 store leaders and associates and bring tasks from across the store into one place, so workers can act where the impact on the customer experience is biggest and most immediate.
Two manager features show where product trailers are located and what is needed to unload them, and give a snapshot of available shelf space with advice on where associates should focus. For associates, Scan to Divert combines inventory and sales floor data to decide which products need stocking right away and which can stay in the backroom.
The app sits within a broader turnaround in which Target is investing $1 billion in the guest experience this year, adding labour hours and refreshing associate training and evaluation.
IADS Notes: Target's store operations push sits within a wider shift of resources toward the sales floor and the systems behind it. Target cut about 500 roles while increasing investment in store staffing (Reuters, February 2026), and its largest remodelling campaign in over a decade covers more than 130 stores, with technology and customer experience upgrades (Chainstore Age CSA, May 2026). In September 2026 it named a chief marketing and guest experience officer as comparable sales rose 3.8% and traffic 3.6% (Customer Experience Dive, September 2026). Availability is the other pressure point: Macy's is extending an AI forecasting overlay to improve in-stock levels, while Target has built a digital twin of its middle-mile inventory positioning (Supply Chain dive, September 2026). Retention remains the open question on the staffing side, as more than 60% of US workers hold a frontline retail job early in their careers and 72% leave retail within five years (The Robin Report, October 2026).
