What: India's apparel market is projected to grow from $95.7 billion in 2025 to $146.3 billion by 2029 (9% CAGR), with rural India and smaller towns driving the expansion, according to a CMAI and 1Lattice report.

Why it is important: With rural India and smaller towns now generating most apparel demand, growth will depend on retailers extending their reach beyond the metros, as Trent's expansion into Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities already shows.

India's apparel market is on course to add nearly $50 billion in four years, rising from $95.7 billion in 2025 to $146.3 billion by 2029, a 9% CAGR, according to a report by the Clothing Manufacturers Association of India and 1Lattice. The market previously expanded from $49.3 billion in 2020 at an 18% CAGR.

Rural India accounted for $55.9 billion, or nearly 58% of the 2025 market. Metro and Tier-1 markets contributed $14.2 billion, Tier-2 markets $8.5 billion and Tier-3 and smaller markets $17.1 billion.

Casualwear led with 31% of the market, ahead of ethnicwear at 27% and formalwear at 26%. Menswear remains the largest segment at $38.5 billion, followed by womenswear at $35.6 billion and kidswear at $21.6 billion, but kidswear (9.4% CAGR) and womenswear (8.9%) are projected to outgrow menswear (8.5%).

Offline retail made up 83% of 2025 sales, worth an estimated $79.4 billion, against $16.3 billion online. Exclusive brand outlets account for around half of offline sales, and marketplaces contribute about 80% of online sales. Much of the next expansion is expected to come from first-time branded consumers, shoppers upgrading and consumers moving from unorganised to organised retail.

IADS Notes: The shift of Indian apparel growth toward smaller markets is already visible in retailer behaviour. Trent's push into Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, built on localised supply chains and region-tailored assortments, has intensified competition with Reliance and Aditya Birla (India Economic Times, February 2026). The strategy is still converting into sales: Trent's Q2 revenue grew 23%, up from 19% in Q1, as its portfolio reached 1,342 stores and Zudio opened its 1,000th (India Economic Times, October 2026). Crisil's analysis of organised apparel retail points the same way. Value fashion now accounts for 46% of sector revenue and expansion is increasingly directed at smaller cities, although FY27 revenue growth of 12-13% comes with operating margins compressing to around 14% (India Economic Times, September 2026). Demand remains supportive, with the Retail Association of India's survey showing retail up 10% in August, apparel included (The Economic Times, September 2026). On channels, ecommerce's share of large listed retailers' sales has grown by only 1–2 percentage points in four to five years, and Croma found that 70–80% of consumers research prices online before buying in store (India Economic Times, August 2026).
