What: Fast Retailing delivered record annual operating profit of 743.13 billion yen ($4.70 billion) on strong results in all regions despite a weak yen in Japan, and guided to 830 billion yen for the year ending August 2027.

Why it is important: Fast Retailing's record year shows value-led apparel can grow through a weak currency and a soft China, while Japan's department stores contend with falling tourist spending and a shift to experience-led formats.

Fast Retailing, owner of Uniqlo, booked its fifth consecutive record annual profit, citing strong results in all regions and overcoming the effects of a weak yen at home.

Operating profit rose about 32% to 743.13 billion yen ($4.70 billion) in the 12 months ended August 31. That beat the company's forecast of 730 billion yen and the 726.45 billion yen average estimate of 16 analysts polled by LSEG. It forecast operating profit of 830 billion yen for the year ending August 2027.

Management warned that the weak yen is making conditions harder in Japan, where higher import costs are expected to weigh on fourth-quarter results and lead to price increases. North America and Europe have been highlights overseas, offsetting sluggish results in mainland China, where consumers remain reluctant to spend. Store numbers have levelled off in Japan and China, and the company is closing underperforming Chinese locations and replacing them with newer, larger shops.

With online retail eating into standard outlets, Fast Retailing is focusing on multi-level flagship stores, and founder Tadashi Yanai, who wants to make the group the world's top clothing retailer, competing with Inditex and H&M, aims to double Japan's flagships to 20 within a decade.

IADS Notes: Fast Retailing's fifth consecutive record profit follows the record year flagged in Reuters, April 2026, when strong results in Asia and the U.S., supply-chain efficiency and demand for value-driven fashion underpinned the group's profitability. That resilience contrasts with Japan's domestic market, where Inside Retail, February 2026 reported falling department store sales and tourist spending while value-oriented retailers such as Uniqlo and Muji weathered the downturn, and where Bloomberg, April 2026 tied the closure of Seibu's Shibuya store to a shift toward curated, experience-led formats. The consumer reluctance in mainland China is consistent with Inside Retail, June 2026, which recorded the first monthly drop in retail sales since 2022 as stimulus effects faded, and with Xinhua, September 2026, which showed goods sales up just 1.1% over the first eight months of 2026 against 4.9% for services.
