An article in the Financial Times argues for the value of multi-brand groups in luxury fashion and accessories. Taking Gucci and the Kering group as a central case, it argues that it is the presence of other brands in the group which allowed Kering to "save" the Gucci brand when it was overstretched. Its current results demonstrate the effectiveness of the strategy. The approach is also validated by struggling US brands Coach and Michael Kors which have recently acquired Kate Spade and Jimmy Choo respectively. The former has renamed itself Tapestry so that Coach is one of several brands under the Tapestry umbrella.
