If there is one thing that we are not short of at the moment it is opinions and forecasts about what retail will look like after the pandemic. A few commentators maintain that we have short memories and that retail will revert to what it was like pre-virus. They differ only on how long it will take to get there (early 2021, late 2021 …). The majority, however, are busy explaining how retail will never be the same again. Most of these adhere to the view developed in an earlier version of this series that the covid-19 pandemic acts as an accelerator of already-existing trends. A version of the Warren Buffett comment that "when the tide goes out, you can see who has been swimming naked".
