Ikea has begun opening smaller stores in Southeast Asia's regional cities. By 2021, Ikea will have compact stores in Chiang Mai, Pattaya, Udon Thani, and other Thai cities with populations mostly under 200 000. The stores do not hold full stock. Some items ordered are delivered from larger stores in major cities. The store already operating in Phuket has 2600m² of space and cost one third of the cost of the full-size store operating in the outskirts of Bangkok. There exist similar stores in the UK and Canada but the idea was not successful in Japan with the 1500m² store in Kumamoto to close at the end of July.
