Yet again, stories are appearing about the death of department stores. Since the 1990s, the format has been decribed as moribund, going the way of dinosaurs, unable to compete effectively with hypermarkets, or discounters, or specialist chains or pure players, according to the period in which these other formats occupied headline space. The latest meteorite to hit the department store planet is, of course, Amazon.
