The Bon-Ton regional US department store chain, based in Milwaukee and York, Pennsylvania, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The company, which operates around 260 retail locations, recently laid out plans to close more than 40 stores across the US under its various banners (Carson's, Elder-Beerman, Herberger's, and Younkers). It is currently negotiating a restructuring plan with potential investors. Analysts have described the retailer as "undifferentiated, unclear, and increasingly irrelevant to consumers". Bon-Ton has revealed plans to invest more in private-label brands, refresh the overall store layout, ditch excess inventory, and strengthen its e-commerce business.
